Digital Commerce 360 published an analysis of the data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce. According to this data, the online sales kept growing during the first quarter of this year, compared to the year before.
According to the provided data, online sales reached USD 231.5 billion in the first quarter of 2022. It means that the growth increased by 6.7 percent, compared to the USD 216.74 billion for the same period of the previous year.
This is the lowest quarterly growth recorded since the third quarter of 2009 when it reached just 3.0% (according to the data of the Commerce Department). However, it is worth mentioning that this comparison is not fair because, in 2021, Ecommerce was still experiencing increased sales due to the pandemic. For example, in the first quarter of 2021, the Ecommerce sales grew by 46.9%, compared to the same period of 2020.
As for the online orders – they reached about 21.2% of the total retail sales. This is about the average value from the second quarter of 2020. All this time, the percentage of online orders varies from 20% to about 23%.
