The eCommerce giant suffered its first quarterly revenue decrease since 2015. Even though the overall revenue increased, the operating costs grew, and decreased eCommerce sales caused the loss. Amazon.com Inc. published information about the sales in the first quarter of 2022.

In this quarter, Amazon reported that total revenue in the first quarter of 2022 reached 116.444 billion USD (7% more than in Q1 2021). However, the operating costs of the giant grew up to 112.775 billion USD (almost 13% more than a year ago). One of the significant factors was increased fulfillment cost (up to 23% more), forcing the company to roll out a 5% fuel surcharge for the independent sellers who use Amazon shipping. Also, international net sales decreased by 6% - from 30.649 billion USD in 2021 to 28.759 billion USD this year. All those factors caused a net loss of 3.844 billion USD.

However, Amazon plans to improve the situation in the next quarter and increase net sales between 3% and 7% compared to 2021. This should lead to results ranging from 1 billion loss to 3 billion growth.
